LYDIA FRANCIS

I grew up drawing, painting, and acting. I always thought that I would eventually have to choose between theater and art as a career. Until my second year of college when I discovered that my passion for theater and my love for art could be wrapped up into one career, scenic design!

In 2011 I received my B.A. in Theater Honors from Gustavus Adolphus College where I designed such productions as Far Away, Seven Jewish Children, and Seven Palestinian Children, directed by Amy Seham, Pains of Youth co-directed by Christian DeMarais and Caitlin McCarthy, and Hamlet directed by Amy Seham.

After graduation I took a year off to explore the theater scene in Minneapolis. I received an internship at the Guthrie theatre that turned into my first professional theater job as a scenic artist.

In 2012 I was accepted into the Scenic Design MFA program at the University of Maryland. For the last three years I have had the opportunity to design for UMD and assist Dan Conway at such theaters as Adventure Theater, Signature Theater, Roundhouse, Studio Theater, Everyman, Milwaukee Rep, and American Repertory Theater. While at the University of Maryland I have designed Moliere Impromptu directed by Matt Wilson, and My Tempest Choreographed by Ana Farfan. Collidescope written and directed by Ping Chong and Talvin Wilks. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at Adventure Theater directed by Roberta Gasbarre. The Lost World written and directed by Jared Mezzocchi Intimate Apparel directed by Jennifer Nelson.

I now live in Minneapolis where I am working as a professor, freelance designer, and scenic artist.  Check out my online store for all of my available jewelry and art pieces.
